    Biographical / Historical

    Notes from donor on Private Richard Carroll Kinder, United States Army (6/5/1910 - 4/13/1945):
    "Born 5 June 1910, Monessen, Pennsylvania. Parents were Charles Richard Kinder and Abigail Elizabeth Steadman. Resided in Gallipolis, Ohio at time of enlistment, 20 July 1944. Bill Kinder served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a PVT, Combat Infantryman with the 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, 3rd Army. He was listed as Missing in Action from 13 April - 2 May 1945. He was later confimed as being killed in action near Bruena, Germany 13 April 1945."

    Scope and Contents

    This collection contains three photocopied V-Mail letters from Pvt. Richard C. Kinder, USA to his mother Abigail Kinder during the Second World War.
    The first two letters were written before Kinder shipped out to Germany, and detail his excitement to serve in the army. The third letter was written from Germany only a few weeks before his death, and his hostility towards the German people is notable.
    This collection also contains biographical information provided by the donor, which is attached to transcriptions of the letters.
