Background

Scope and content:

The American Indian Heritage Group Records primarly consists of newsletters from 1972 to 1974. Self-published as "Tribal Path," the newsletters documents meeting minutes of the organization and cover a wide range of topics including the American Indian Movement, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, discussions of Native American heritage and history, and charitable initiatives for Native Americans in prison and recovery houses. In some cases, poetry, short essays, and artwork created by group members are included. The newsletters also give insight on policies and regulations within California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo and the level of involvement that correctional officers had with the group. An American Indian Heritage membership card and two event programs are also included in the collection.
