Background

Scope and content:

The American Indian Heritage Group Records primarly consists of newsletters from 1972 to 1974. Self-published as "Tribal Path," the newsletters documents meeting minutes of the organization and cover a wide range of topics including the American Indian Movement, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, discussions of Native American heritage and history, and charitable initiatives for Native Americans in prison and recovery houses. In some cases, poetry, short essays, and artwork created by group members are included. The newsletters also give insight on policies and regulations within California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo and the level of involvement that correctional officers had with the group. An American Indian Heritage membership card and two event programs are also included in the collection.

The American Heritage Indian Group was organization made up of about 25 inmates at the California Men's Colony in San Luis Obispo formed in the early 1970s. The group consisted of American Indians of various tribal origin who were interested in their cultural heritage. A self-published newsletter, "Tribal Path," collected the organization's meeting minutes as well as articles and poetry related to Native American culture and heritage.

Processing information:

The collection was processed by Anahi Ramirez in the summer of 2024, with a focus on folder-level organization. Staples and paper clips were removed from the materials and were replaced with acid-free paper slings. The items were then rehoused into acid-free folders and arranged within an archival document box. Each folder was labeled in accordance with Special Collections protocol to meet preservation standards and ensure systematic access to the materials.
