Biographical / historical:

John A. Sutter, Jr., was born in Switzerland October 24, 1826, the oldest son of Johann August Sutter. In September of 1848, he arrived at Sacramento to join his father. He managed his father's property between 1848 and 1851 and helped found the city of Sacramento. In 1852, Sutter, Jr. moved to Mexico. For many years, he served as commercial agent and consul for the U.S. State Department in Acapulco. He died in Mexico on September 21, 1897.
