Background

Scope and content:

These papers, collected by H. H. Bancroft for his history of California, consist mainly of Alviso family documents, many of them relating to the sale of cattle, tallow and hides, and to early government in San Jose. Also included are some miscellaneous papers of John B. R. Cooper, Mariano G. Vallejo, Thomas O. Larkin and James McKinlay.

Bancroft's numbering and arrangement of the papers, roughly chronological, have been retained. A list of the documents is included, followed by a list of correspondents, addressees (other than members of the Alviso family), and/or signers of documents.
