Biographical / historical:

Born March 7, 1898 in Sacramento, California. About 1906, economics forced him to drop out of grammar school and he became a bicycle messenger boy at the State Printing Plant. He then became an apprentice in the composing room, beginning a 6-year apprenticeship. World War I intervened and he enlisted. On his return, his job was waiting. He completed his apprenticeship for journeyman printer and took the printer test and passed. He became a printer in the composing room. A high school diploma was mandatory in order to qualify for a promotion to foreman of the composing room. Strong began attending night school and attained his high school diploma. He took the composing room foreman test, passed and got that job. Strong was a qualified linotype machinist and repairman and continued in this capacity until his retirement in 1958 after fifty years of state service.

His mother worked as a corset fitter at Hale's, an early-day Sacramento department store. Strong was married twice, lost both wives and now (Fall 1989) lives with his younger sister at Pioneer Towers, Sacramento. A special project during World War II was the printing of "invasion currency" at the State Printing Plant.
