Biographical / historical:

Pioneer Church is the oldest organized church in Sacramento. On September 16, 1849, in the schoolhouse on the northwest corner of I and 3rd Streets, a small group of men voted to form the First Church of Christ Congregational, in Sacramento City. Rev. Joseph A. Benton, the first pastor, was one of the leading California pioneers.
