Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of scattered business papers of the proprietress and nine years' worth of the Minnie Hotel register.

Biographical / historical:

Minnie's Hotel opened for business at 28 South Center Street, Stockton, Calif. in 1951. The business was operated from the first by Mrs. Minnie McLane--later Dugger (1954), then Palmer (1964). This establishment, located in an old, run-down neighborhood, catered chiefly to agricultural workers and transients. Rooms were seventy-five cents a night there at a time when the middle class considered Motel 6's six dollars per night rates a true bargain. The Minnie Hotel ceased operation in 1965.
