Scope and Content
Series 5 of the Records of the Office of the President consists of 'routine' or background files from the period 1958-1967,
the administration of Clark Kerr.
With the Kerr administration, an entirely new filing system was adopted, the major feature of which was to divide materials
between 'Routine' and 'Policy' files. The routine files consist mainly of memoranda, correspondence, reports which lead up
to a policy decision. Often the final expression of that decision will not be found in these files, but the files contain
most of the background materials to the decision.
These files were transferred to University Archives in two transfers; in 1975 files for 1958-1962 were transferred, and in
1977 files for 1963-1967. The two parallel files were integrated when they were inventoried and sent to storage in 1996 and
1997. At the time of the transfer, the policy files were retained for the use of the Office of the President. These files
have now also been transferred to University Archives and will be found as Series 6 of this record group.
The inventory that follows is in file number order, as created in the Office of the President. There is an alphabetical index
to the filing system, and in addition there are card indexes which provide an even more detailed approach to these records.
The card index can be searched through the University Archivist. Although these references always refer to the file numbers
used for particular subjects, materials must be requested from storage by box number.
