Scope and content:

The collection consists of letters, documents (including 307 bound volumes) and some photographs related to the life, land holdings, and business activities of David Jacks. The correspondence spans the years 1855 to 1919, and the business and legal papers related to Monterey are from 1835 to 1926. The collection also includes information about the Pacific Grove Retreat Association from 1875 to 1911.

Biographical / historical:

David Jacks, pioneer businessman in Monterey, California, sailed around the Horn to California in 1848. In 1850 he settled in Monterey, where he acquired extensive land holdings and became a farmer and stock raiser. Jacks was involved in much litigation concerning his properties, including a suit by the city of Monterey in 1877 to regain land held by Jacks. He was instrumental in the construction of the Monterey and Salinas Valley Railroad in 1874, in establishing the Pacific Grove Retreat, and in founding the city of Del Monte.
