This collection of papers relates to Russell R. Miller's 1970 campaign, as Democratic candidate running against the long-time Republican incumbent William S. Mailliard, for the sixth Congressional District seat, representing parts of San Francisco and Marin counties. Although unsuccessful in his bid for election, he ran one of the closest races in the state and considerably reduced Mailliard's usual victory margin. The final vote was 53 percent to 47 percent.

The papers, given by Mr. Miller to The Bancroft Library in September 1977, include correspondence, statements and position papers, press releases, campaign literature and memorabilia, materials on strategy and office organization, research materials gathered by his staff on important issues, information on his opponent, William Mailliard, newspaper clippings, etc. They are described in greater detail below.
