Background

Scope and content:

The Margaret T. Hodgen Papers contain correspondence chiefly relating to her work and publications in sociology, with a few letters pertaining to the loyalty oath controversy at the University of California. However, the bulk of the collection consists of her extensive card files of research notes, along with manuscripts of some of her works, including the revised manuscript and corrected galley proofs for a paper, Anthropology in the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and a draft of an untitled manuscript on Edward Gibbon. Also among Hodgen's papers are her vita and bibliography, reviews of her works, and a few maps and charts used as illustrations in her books.

The collection has been divided into two series: Correspondence, and Research and Writings. Correspondence was further divided into outgoing (arranged chronologically), and incoming (arranged alphabetically by author or organization, and then chronologically). A folder of unlisted or unidentified letters is at the end of the file. The note cards of Hodgen's research have been boxed in card file boxes in the order received; no further attempt was made to organize the multiple repetitions of the alphabetical arrangement.
