Although William Green Eggleston studied medicine and earned a medical degree, he spent most of his life writing, first editing medical journals and later engaging in newspaper work in Illinois and in Montana. About 1913 he moved to California, settling in Oakland. He served, for a time, as editor of the Star, published in San Francisco by James H. Barry, and also devoted considerable time, as an independent editorial writer, to his interests in single tax, home rule taxation, direct legislation, and other political and economic reforms.

His papers, which relate primarily to these interests, were given to the Bancroft Library by his widow in December 1959. Covering the period 1891 to 1937, they consist of letters written to him and by him; manuscripts of his essays, speeches and articles; notes; reprints of his articles, pamphlets collected by him, and clippings. Two volumes of the newspaper known as The Press (Helena, Montana, 1902-1904), of which Eggleston was editor, were removed for separate cataloging.

Mrs. Eggleston also gave the papers of her son, Arthur, to the library at the same time. They comprise the collection C-B 475.
