Scope and content:

The collection consists of a scrapbook prepared in commemoration of the International Society of Christian Endeavor's 50th anniversary (1881-1931) documenting the convention held in San Francisco, July 11-16, 1931. Included in the scrapbook are memos, posters, publications, programs, meeting agendas, clippings, tourist information about San Francisco and California, pledge cards, and photographs. Also included in the collection is an address by Fred D. Parr, "The Chapter as a Home Missionary Force" given to the International Epworth League Convention, Buffalo, N.Y., 1914.

Biographical / historical:

Christian Endeavor International is a multinational, interdenominational Christian organization for young people which purportedly had as many as 4 million members in 1931. The organization assists local churches in evangelizing young people for ministry and service in the local community and worldwide. It conducts educational seminars and workshops and sponsors Christian Endeavor Week. It is affiliated with the World Christian Endeavor Union. Publications include the Christian Endeavor World Newsletter.

The International Society of Christian Endeavor celebrated its 50th anniversary at a convention held in San Francisco, July 11-16, 1931. General Chairman of the Conference was Paul Shoup. A scrapbook of materials pertaining to this event was prepared by Fred D. Parr, Associate Chairman of the San Francisco Convention. Notables at the convention included International Christian Endeavor President, Dr. Daniel A. Poling, and Mrs. Francis E. (Harriet Abbott) Clark, who co-founded the organization with her husband in 1881. President Herbert Hoover also gave a radio address at the convention.
