The R. Freeman Butts collection contains writings, research materials, correspondence, and other materials relating to a prominent American educator. A prolific author, Butts wrote a number of books and contributed numerous articles to professional journals in the field of education. Butts wrote extensively on themes of public education and citizenship; he wrote critically about efforts to privatize education and create charter schools. He also participated in numerous professional organizations, and the collection contains correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports relating to these activities.
