William Spencer Lowden was born in Windsor, Massachusetts, June 27, 1830. He was the son of Spencer Lowden and Mehitable White Bates. His family moved to Mt. Sterling, Illinois, where he was educated and trained as a carpenter. He came to Sacramento in 1849 and to Trinity County, California in 1850. In 1851 he settled on Lowden Ranch on the Trinity River near Lewiston.
He founded the Weaverville and Shasta Wagon Road Company, which built the first wagon road into Trinity County. It was completed in 1858. He also owned the Lewiston Turnpike Company.
In 1872 he moved to Weaverville where in addition to his wagon road interests he did business as a surveyor and land attorney. He was United States Deputy Surveyor and Trinity County Surveyor for many years. His son Henry Larkin joined with him in the surveying business.
Mr. Lowden's parents, four brothers and sister followed him to Trinity County. Mr. Lowden was married on October 22, 1856 to Helen Emily Trask He died in Weaverville June 10, 1912. He was succeeded in the land business and as County Surveyor and U.S. Deputy Surveyor by his son, "Hank" (1857-1935).
