Biographical / historical:

Tarr came to California in 1849 from Chillicothe, Missouri. He lived in Sacramento and mined gold on the Feather River before returning to Missouri in 1851. In 1853, he attempted to return to California by ship. However, the ship, the Independence, was wrecked off the island Margarita in Lower California and he was drowned.
