Scope and content:

Approximately two hundred forty originals, transcripts, photocopies, and microfilm copies of California gold rush letters, dated 1848-1859. Also includes documents relating to the gold rush, such as passenger lists, business agreements, and mining laws. Items also cataloged individually. Letters contain comments and observations on the effect the California Gold Rush is having in the lives of the authors.

Acquisition information:
The California Gold Rush Letters were given to or purchased by The Bancroft Library from various sources. When known the donors or owners of originals are noted on the folders. The microfilm in Part II is a copy of papers owned by the Chicago Historical Soceity.
