Elizabeth Alice Preston Hanlin was born in Roseville in 1912 to Chester H. and Mabel Beal Preston. Chester was born in March 1881 in Pennsylvania, where he lived until he moved to California to work as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Elizabeth Preston Hanlin Collection is arranged in four series: 1. Ephemera, 2. Publications, 3. Albums/Scrapbooks, and 4. Photographic Material. Items span the years 1913 to 1929.

The first series, Ephemera, includes a graduation certificate and Roseville school graduation programs. Series 2, Publications, includes a Roseville High School student manual and student yearbooks. The third series, Albums/Scrapbooks, include Hanlin's scrapbook of postcards, certificates, birthday cards, photographs, and inspirational cards. The last series, Photographic Material, includes two grammar school class photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Elizabeth Alice Preston Hanlin was born in Roseville on November 22, 1912 to Chester H. and Mabel Beal Preston. Chester was born in March 1881 in Pennsylvania, where he lived until he moved to California to work as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He lived on Third Ave. in Roseville when he met Mabel Beal. Mabel was born on March 17, 1883 in California and worked as a milliner's apprentice in Santa Cruz. The couple married in 1911 and moved to 322 Duranta St. Chester soon worked his way up to conductor for the railroad. Less than three years after the birth of Elizabeth, her sister Harriet was born on January 19, 1915.

Elizabeth attended local schools and graduated from Roseville Union High School in 1929 at the age of sixteen. She attended Sacramento Junior College before transferring to UC Berkeley. After graduating from Cal in 1933, Elizabeth received her teaching credential from University of the Pacific in 1935. She returned to teach English and Journalism at Roseville Union High School until 1939 when she married James Hanlin. Although she had known James in Roseville, Elizabeth did not begin dating him until they both attended Sacramento Jr. College.

James Maxwell Hanlin was born on November 20, 1910 in North Dakota to Christian Hoover Hanlin and Lois Wilkinson Hanlin. Christian was born on March 15, 1876 on Shippensburg, PA and worked as a farmer. After his marriage on June 27, 1906 to Lois, born on December 27, 1880 in Dunigan, CA, the couple lived in North Dakota but traveled to Hong Kong, China, Japan, and the Philippines as missionaries for the Presbyterian Church. Their two oldest sons, Paul and James, were born in North Dakota. Richard and Judith were born in the Philippines. After returning to America, the family lived in Blythe before moving to Berkeley, where Christian worked as a teacher. By 1930 the Hanlin's had moved to El Dorado Ave. in Roseville and Christian opened a law office at 103 Main St. Christian died of tetanus on August 24, 1934.

After graduating in 1938 from Hastings Law School in San Francisco with a law degree, James worked as an attorney for the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in San Francisco. He lived in Berkeley with his mother and sister Judith. On July 8, 1939 James and Elizabeth were married and moved into their own place in Berkeley. The following year Lois died on May 22, 1940. Their daughter Lois Elizabeth was born on May 2, 1941 followed by Martha Jane on March 28, 1945, and Kathryn Alice on October 27, 1947. The family lived in Berkeley and Fremont. During the 1950s Elizabeth returned to teaching. She taught at both junior and high schools in the Bay Area.

James M. Hanlin died of cancer on May 1, 1968. Elizabeth suffered a stroke in 1994, but she recovered. In 2005 she moved to Santa Barbara where her daughter Martha lives, and is currently residing in an assisted living facility in Santa Barbara.
