This collection contains photographs and writings by Ronald G. Powell, a Santa Cruz County historian. The photographs depict the Forest of Nisene Marks State park and Powell's journeys along California's northern and central coasts. Powell's writings are on the history of the Rancho Soquel and the Rancho Soquel Augmentation, as well as the history of Santa Cruz County.

Scope and content:

This collection contains Ronald G. Powell's photographs and writings. The photographs depict the Loma Prieta Lumber Company, the Molino Timber Company, the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, the Soquel Demonstration State Forest, and Powell's "photo journeys" of Northern and Central California's Coast Range mountains and other Central Coast nature areas.

Also included are Powell's research and writings on the history of the Ranco Soquel Augmentation and the Rancho Soquel, as well as the history of Santa Cruz County.

Biographical / historical:

Ronald G. Powell (1931-2010) was a local Santa Cruz County historian. After he retired in the 1970s, he began photographing the Forest of Nisene Marks, as well as going on "photo journeys" along the northern and central California coast. Around 1990, Powell began researching and compiling a history of the Rancho Soquel Augmentation and the Rancho Soquel. His work also includes a history of F.A. Hihn and the story of the partition of the Ranchos, as well as the history of Santa Cruz County.
