Includes original, handwritten letter, as well as a photocopy of the letter, which provides some details about Mr. Atkins six-month journey overland in 1849 from the Gulf of Mexico through the Colorado Desert to San Francisco and then to Sacramento in California.

Biographical / historical:

Henry Blatchford Atkins was born in New York City on August 25th 1816. He arrived in San Francisco in 1849 after a difficult six-month journey from the Gulf of Mexico. Mr. Atkins died in 1901.
