Background

Scope and content:

The Republican Party of California records include minutes and transcripts of meetings, correspondence, memoranda, financial and legal records, polling data, printed matter, clippings, photographs, and sound recordings related to elections and Republican Party activities in California.

The bulk of the material can be found in Chronological File I (1980s- 1990s) and Chronological File II (1990s-2000s). These materials were grouped based on an original filing system of the California Republican Party (CRP). The files include pleadings, discovery, exhibits, and other documents relating to litigation involving the CRP. Many of the cases documented in these files relate to campaign financing as regulated by the Fair Political Practices Commission of California (FPPC) and the Federal Election Commission (FEC), voter rights, and election regulations. In addition, these chronological files include extensive reports on campaign funding, as well as legal clearance requests.

The collection also includes the files of Shawn Steel, who was chairman of the CRP from 2001 to 2003.
