Background

Scope and content:

Open reel tape recordings of interviews with prominent figures in the audio and sound recording industry conducted by John Sunier for his radio program Audiophile Audition. Sunier broadcast the weekly national radio program from 1985 to 1998, drawing from the material contained on these reels to create hour-long profiles from virtually every corner of the audio world: engineers, designers, musicians, conductors, producers, label owners, manufacturers, journalists, and scientists. The content is principally interviews, but there are a few lectures and panel discussions as well. Among the more recognizable subjects: Jerry Bruck, Robert N. Parker, Wilma Cozart Fine, George Martin, Don Ososke (Ampex), Peter Hammar (Ampex Museum), Jack T. Mullin, Orrin Keepnews, George H. Buck, Jr. (GHB), Michael Cuscuna (Mosaic), Manfred Eicher (ECM), Bernard Coutaz and Rene Goiffon (Harmonia Mundi), Foster Reed (New Albion), Will Ackerman (Windham Hill), Nicolas Slonimsky, Michael Tilson Thomas (interview by Alan Farley), David Harrington (Kronos Quartet), Henry Mancini, Dave Grusin, Keith Jarrett, Bobby Hutcherson, Claude Bolling, Danny Zeitlin, Bernie Krause, Mickey Hart, Pat Gleason. From Stanford University, John Chowning and Jeffrey Borish from the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics and Barbara Sawka of the Archive of Recorded Sound were interviewed. Unfortunately, only a partial list of contents is available at the Archive. Audiophile Audition is now a "web magazine for music, audio and home theater," accessible at http://www.audaud.com.

The John Sunier Collection was donated to the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound by John Sunier from 1988 to 1996.
