Background
- Scope and content:
-
The bulk of the collection consists of writings by Evelyn Freedman between 1981 and 1985. These include lengthy interviews of major GLBT figures such as Troy Perry, Gore Vidal, John Rechy, Christine Jorgensen, and Charles Pierce, published in Stallion magazine, as well as another interview with Rechy published in the New York Native, and three short articles published in Frontiers. The writings also include copies (as well as a few drafts and notes) of her social columns, "Around Town" (published in The Voice) and "Out & About Los Angeles" (published in Update), detailing activities of Los Angeles GLBT clubs and organizations and the gay social scene. The personal files include typed notes for a curriculum vitae, and handwritten notes from a two-day consciousness-raising workshop. The correspondence file includes a handwritten note from actor Ed Asner. The motorcycle clubs file contains materials relating to the Senate, a league of motorcycle and social clubs, and color photographs taken of a November 1980 run by an unnamed Los Angeles motorcycle club, most probably the Centurions. The photographs, all found in an envelope dated November 17, 1983, from American Theatre Arts, include Oren Curtis & Steve Yudson in the play "Sherlock Holmes"; Jim Kepner receiving a check from Gene's TV; Michael Goodwin (both a 1978 photograph and an original drawing, "Discover the Brotherhood of man"); two members of Frontrunners Track Club at a Christopher Street West run; a publicity shot for a June 1983 CameraVision show; and an advertisement for an exhibition of the erotic photography of Doug Hinckle.
