Background

-
The collection contains one Civil War era note (ANS), 1862, from Morrison R. Waite (1816-1888) to R. F. Paine, concerning finances of [?] Rains, who was at Weston, Virginia, with the Ohio 67th Regiment. Also included is one undated engraving of Waite as U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice.
Waite gained attention in 1871 as a representative with the U.S. delegation to an international arbitration involving a dispute between the United States and Great Britain over the outfitting of Confederate vessels in British ports. In the settlement, the United States was awarded $15.5 million. In 1874 Pres. Grant nominated Waite as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a position that had been vacated by Salmon P. Chase. He was confirmed by the Senate and served as Chief Justice until his death in 1888.
