Scope and content:

This collection is divided into three series: Business Correspondence, Business Papers and Personal Papers. The Business Correspondence is comprised mainly of letters that Amos Gould wrote to Alfred L. Williams concerning their joint business interests in the Amboy, Lansing and Traverse Bay Railroad. The series also contains letters that Amos Gould wrote to other business associates, including A. Poud and E. Baker and his brother Ebenezer Gould. There is one file of letters written to Ebenezer Gould as well. The Business Papers contain deeds, contracts, patents, receipts and other miscellaneous items related to the business careers of Amos and Ebenezer Gould, as well as other Gould family members. The Personal Papers, the smallest of the three series, contains one file of letters written between family members and a file of photographs.

Biographical / historical:

The Goulds were a prominent, Owosso, Michigan family.

Amos Gould founded the First National Bank of Owosso in 1865, and was its president until his death in 1882. He was also Owosso's first mayor, elected in 1859. His brother, Ebenezer Gould, was a commanding officer of the 5th Michigan Cavalry.
