Manuscripts include two file folders and are arranged chronologically. Carey indexed two California cemeteries, Volcano Catholic Cemetery in Amador County and Gold Hill Cemetery in Placer County, as part of her genealogical research.

Born Margaret June Taylor on June 9, 1925 in Peoria, Illinois, Peggy Carey's interest in genealogy began after her marriage to Leo Carey on August 16, 1946. Her mother-in-law claimed the Carey family as descendents of Mary, Queen of Scots. This information intrigued her and led Peggy to her lifelong love of genealogical research.

Leo Carey joined the U.S. Air Force in 1946 and the newlyweds immediately moved to Renton, Washington where Leo was stationed. The Carey's then relocated to Germany, New York, Virginia, Panama, Texas, Guam, and Arkansas. During these years the family grew to include four sons, Leo Jr., Michael, Dennis, and Donald.

In 1964 Leo retired from the Air Force and the family contemplated settling in California. After a visit to Leo's brother in Granite Bay, the Carey's decided to make Roseville their home where they bought a house on Gregory Court. The family lived there for the next six years before moving to Loreto Drive, where Leo and Peggy lived until their divorce in 1980.

Like many people in the 1970s, Peggy seriously began researching her family after seeing the miniseries Roots, based on the book by Alex Haley. She first joined the Genealogical Association of Sacramento (GAS), but when a group of members split from GAS to form the Root Cellar, Peggy became a charter member. She also joined the Placer County Genealogical Society. While a member of these societies, Peggy attended classes and workshops, learning everything she could about genealogical research. In 1983, responding to a growing interest in cemeteries, Peggy compiled indexes for the Volcano Catholic Cemetery in Amador County and the Gold Hill Cemetery in Placer County. She provided free copies to local libraries and research institutions.

In October 1990 Peggy founded the Maidu Genealogical Group, which met at the Maidu Community Center. She remained a member for several years before retiring to concentrate on researching her own Taylor family tree, which is rumored to be descended from President Zachary Taylor.
