- John Eugene Englekirk (1905- ) was a professor of Spanish and Portuguese. He taught at the University of New Mexico (1928-39), Tulane University (1939-58), and at UCLA. He also served as treasurer (1938-40), president (1940-42), and vice-president (1955-57, 1961-63, 1967-69) of the International Institute of Ibero-American Literature, and was the president of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (1949). The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, notes, manuscripts and class registers, microfilm, and other materials relating to Englekirk's career.

Englekirk was born on September 24, 1905 in New York City; AB, St. Stephen's College, 1926; AM, Northwestern University, 1928; diploma, University of Madrid, 1930; Ph.D, Columbia University, 1934; diploma, University of Chile, 1938; from instructor to associate professor, University of New Mexico (1928-39); from associate professor to professor of Spanish and department head, Tulane University (1939-58); professor (1958-73), department chair (1959-62), and professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese, UCLA; treasurer (1938-40), president (1940-42), and vice-president (1955-57, 1961-63, 1967-69), International Institute of Ibero-American Literature; president, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (1949); published works include: (with Gerald E. Wade) Bibliografía de la novela colombiana (1950), (with Margaret M. Ramos) La narrativa uruguaya : estudio crítico-bibliográfico (1967), and Edgar Allan Poe in Hispanic literature (1972); he died on October 1, 1983.
