Collection consists of bound photocopies of letters, reports and other documents on microfilm from originals in Mexican National Archives. Correspondents include Serra, Portola, Anza, Palou, Vizcaino, Escalante and other Spanish religious, military and political leaders. Includes correspondence and reports by Fr. Junipero Serra (1713-1784) on founding of Mission San Diego (1769), on founding of Carmel Mission (1770), on plague of grasshoppers in California (1774) and other topics; Francisco de Palou (1723-1789) diary of Portola expedition (1769), report on state of missions in California (n.d.); Juan Bautista de Anza's diary of overland trip from Sonora, Mexico to San Francisco Bay (1776); and Juan Salvatierra's summary of all California exploration prior to 1697.
