- Biographical / historical:

The Astrogram newsletter is a mechanism for disseminating news about Ames Research Center, and includes information about the center's research activities, achievements, events, culture, and workforce. From the 1950s through the 2000s, the newsletter contained a classified advertisement section for staff, which was discontinued in the 2010s.
The initial Astrogram issue was published in October 1958, the first month that Ames Research Center began operating as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Although Ames formed in 1939 as the NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, there was no newsletter prior to 1958.
From 1958 through February 2002, the Astrogram was published every other Thursday. Beginning in March 2002, it was published once a month at the beginning of the month, reporting the previous month's activities and events. Beginning in October 2007, the Astrogram was published monthly in digital format only. Publication of the Astrogram was suspended in 2009. In 2010 the publication resumed but only two issues were produced, in both print and digital formats. Starting in 2011, distribution changed to quarterly in both print and digital formats. From May 2016, the newsletter was only issued in digital form and posted on the center's website. In 2019, the January issue was suspended due to the 2019 Government Shutdown. The Astrogram resumed the following month. In May 2023 the Astrogram was published bi-monthly on the website.
In its first years, the Astrogram was a joint effort of the Ames Photography Branch and Administrative Service, with the Personnel Branch providing editing services. Today, the Astrogram is the responsibility of the Office of Communications.
