I.  Personal Papers 1961-1985

Series Scope and Content Summary

Biographical information on Hill and Kruse comes in three forms: two applications that provide both personal and resume-like information on the two architects, and an obituary for Hill written by Kruse. Student work is drawings done by Kruse during his time at the naval architecture program at MIT. Writings consist of some quotations collected by Hill.

II.  Professional Papers 1952-1962

 

A.  Writings

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Contains papers highlighting Hill's professional career: a list of publications for Hill and his work from 1939-1963, articles written by Hill on architectural topics, clippings about Hill and his professional activities, and a few clippings on specific projects. It also includes a few photographs that appear to be professionally-related.
 

B.  Presentations

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Includes drafts and final copies of lectures that Hill gave to professional groups on architectural topics.
 

C.  Reference Files

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Contains clippings that Hill collected on architectural ideas, such as sculpture and the Japanese influences on Western architecture. It also contains an extensive file on Coventry Cathedral, on which Hill gave a presentation in 1962.

Consists of a client list, produced in 1976, for houses designed by Hill c.a. 1946-1959.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Correspondence collects communications between Hill & Kruse clients and between the architects themselves. Some of the correspondence is personal or professional in nature, but is generally project-related.

Comprised of a ledger produced for projects during 1976-1977.
 

D. Portraits

A few photographs of Hill, used as publicity.
 

E. Public Relations

Contains promotion and publicity materials on Kruse's award-winning San Rafael home.
 

F. Photographs

Consists of two unidentified bound portfolios of finished Hill and/or Kruse projects, as well as a folder of random collected unidentified photographs.
 

G. Clippings

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Contains articles written about Hill & Kruse projects. Hill's only representative is a collection publicizing his design of the Gunnison prefab Homes; Kruse's articles highlight multiple projects: the Capp home, a project in Davenport, IA, and his San Rafael home. Also includes tearsheets from various projects such as Hill's early work with Dinwiddie.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Consists of an extensive collection of master drawings of building and furniture details that John Kruse collected.
 

I.  Product Literature

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

Contains publicity materials for a Pack River product called Tenex that Hill apparently used in his projects. Tenex was waferwood textured paneling used for cabinets, sliding doors, storage walls, furniture, and counter fronts.

V. Project Records 1971-2000

Series Scope and Content Summary

Contains 253 project records from throughout Hill's and Kruse's careers. Most records contain drawings of projects, and many contain project files as well, including cost accountings, correspondence, construction notes, and specifications. A few project records also contain photographs.
