Florence Connelly Shipek (1918-2003) was historian and anthropologist, who specialized in Native American history and culture in Southern California. She was born on December 11, 1918, in North Adams, Massachusetts and earned her BA and MA degrees in anthropology from the University of Arizona. After moving to San Diego in the early 1950s, Shipek became involved with the local tribes as a volunteer to help preserve federal support for Native American communities. In the late 1950s, she assisted attorneys working on tribal land claims – recording interviews with Native American elders and documenting their histories and customs. She continued her research through the 1970s, which resulted in two books and made her an expert witness in Native American land and water rights cases. In 1977, Shipek earned her Ph.D. in ethnohistory from the University of Hawaii. From 1978 to retirement, she was a professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Shipek also served as a long-time member of the Congress of History, giving presentations about Native Americans at history conferences. In 2002, she received the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) People in Preservation "Lifetime Achievement" award. Florence Shipek passed away on January 9, 2003, in Point Loma, San Diego, California.
