Scope and content:

Collection consists of radio scripts related to the career of writer John Dunkel. Includes scripts from Escape, Fort Laramie (1956), Gunsmoke (1956-59), Hallmark hall of fame, Have gun will travel (1958), Romance (1954-55), and Suspense. Also includes spots from I was there (1941-44).

Biographical / historical:

John Dunkel was born in Springfield, OH, ca. 1915. He attended Wittenberg College. He began his career in the early 1930s reading plays for the Pasadena Playhouse. He went on to become a head writer for CBS Radio in Hollywood, CA. In the 1950s he became a prolific television writer working on a number of popular television westerns including, The Virginian, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, and Rawhide, among others. He died February 22, 2001 in North Hollywood, CA of natural causes.
