Built in 1951, Crothers Hall was named for sponsor Judge George Edward Crothers, one of the first students to enter Leland Stanford Junior University on its opening day, Crothers also was the first graduate in law (1896), the first Stanford alumnus to serve on the Stanford Board of Trustees and the first to endow a law scholarship (1912). An adjoining building, Crothers Memorial Hall, opened in 1955 to house graduate students in engineering. It was named in honor of Margaret Jane Crothers, Judge George E. Crothers' mother, as Judge Crothers donated a significant amount towards the building's construction. Each dormitory had dedicated community spaces, including library rooms.
