Hobart Johnstone Whitley was a Southern California real estate developer, and head of the H.J. Whitley land syndicate. The collection consists of about 2000 pieces of correspondence, and deeds, accounts, journals, ledgers, minutes of stockholders' meetings, maps of Southern California real estate, clippings, photographs, and pictures relating to Whitley's land syndicate, as well as some personal papers of his family. Papers relate to real estate development in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo Company, Corcoran in Kings County, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Westwood, Van Nuys, and the San Fernando Valley.

Collection consists of about 2000 pieces of correspondence, and deeds, accounts, journals, ledgers, minutes of stockholders' meetings, maps of Southern California real estate, clippings, photographs, and pictures relating to Whitley's land syndicate, as well as some personal papers of his family. Includes about 3500 bills, deeds, and legal papers, and 65 volumes of minute books and various account books for the Van Nuys Water Company, Owensmouth Water Company, Suburban Homes Company, Security Land and Loan Company, Corcoran Land Company, Corcoran Realty Company, Waukena Development Company, Los Angeles Suburban Home Company, Angiola Development Company, and H.J. Whitley Land Company, and records relating to Rancho Los Feliz. Papers relate to real estate development in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo Company, Corcoran in Kings County, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Westwood, Van Nuys, and the San Fernando Valley. Also includes a manuscript biography of Whitley by his wife.
