Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of three items. A letter from James Duncan to F.D. Atherton dated February 28th, 1863 and posted from London. The letter mentions earlier days spent in Valparaiso, Chile, upcoming marriage of Prince of Wales to the Danish Princess Alexandra, a pending legal case concerning a lawsuit against Daniel Gibb and another business interest in a mine that Mr. Duncan was trying to sell. There is also a check addressed to F.D. Atherton for one hundred dollars drawn on a Bank of California check dated July 14, 1873. The last item is newspaper clipping dated 2/3/1915 about a cookbook written by Mrs. Norman McLaren. The recipes contained in the cookbook were collected by Mrs. McLaren beginning in the 1860's when she was a young person visiting the Athertons, Ralstons and Mills in California. The article discusses these early California social gatherings and specifically the Chilean recipes that she gathered through association with the Athertons.
