- Biographical / historical:
-
The music library offers a comfortable and well-furnished environment for individuals to study and enjoy music from various times and cultures. Its comprehensive collection includes books, journals, scores, recordings, research databases, and platforms for streaming audio and video. In 1949, Edward Colby (1912-2006) was appointed as Stanford's first Music Librarian, following recommendations from Professors W. Loran Crosten and Leonard G. Ratner. The library's origins are rooted in the period when the Music Department occupied the Knoll, which later became the Center for Computer-Assisted Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). This location had previously served as the residence of Stanford President Ray Lyman Wilbur and his family from 1918 to 1943. The music library's key objectives encompass providing convenient access to resources, curating diverse collections, preserving research materials, and improving accessibility to music materials in various formats for the Stanford University community.
