Howard Lester McKenzie (May 25, 1910-October 17, 1968) received an M.S. degree in 1934 from the University of California Berkeley and after graduation took a position at the Citrus Experiment Station. In 1937 he accepted a position as forest entomologist with the United States Department of Agriculture, with headquarters at Berkeley. McKenzie began employment with the California Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Entomology at Sacramento in 1942. In 1958 he began as Associate Entomologist in the Experiment Station at Davis and was promoted to Entomologist in 1963.
His book Mealybugs of California, with taxonomy, biology, and control of North American species (Homoptera, Coccoidea, Pseudococcidae) was published in 1967. In this volume, he brought the science of coccidology to a new high with an abundance of minutely detailed drawings and a profusion of colored plates which were painted by Mary Foley Benson.
