One color lithograph postcard of the Manchuria (built 1904; passenger vessel).

Postcard is postmarked October 3, 1910, Honolulu, and addressed to Mrs. N. Hammer, Filbert & Scott Streets, San Francisco.

Biographical / historical:

Historical Note
The MANCHURIA was a passenger steamship launched on November 2, 1903 from New York. She was acquired by the U.S. Navy on April 10, 1918, and commissioned as the USS MANCHURIA, a troop carrier. The vessel was decommissioned on September 11, 1919, and returned to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. She was employed on the New York to Hamburg run from 1919 to 1923, then transferred to the New York to San Francisco run.

In November 1928, MANCHURIA was sold to Dollar Steamship Line, and renamed PRESIDENT JOHNSON. She was sold to the Maritime Commission in October 1938, and operated by American President Lines. She was acquired by the U.S. Army in November 1941 again to be used as a troop transport vessel. PRESIDENT JOHNSON was sold in April 1946 to Tagus Navigational Co., Panama City, Panama, and renamed SANTA CRUZ in 1948. She finally was scrapped at Savona, Italy in January 1962.

Custodial history:

The items were donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by Norman Reed on March 19, 1962. The materials were accessioned into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
