Scope and content:

This collection consists of 5 postcards primarily of scenes along the San Francisco (Calif.) waterfront and with a single card of the GJOA on display in Golden Gate Park.

Biographical / historical:

Historical Note
GJOA was a sloop built in 1872 in Rosendal, Norway and used in the fishing trades before it was bought by Roald Amundsen in 1900. Commanded by Amundsen, she was the first ship to transit the Northwest Passage. On June 16, 1903, GJOA sailed from Christiania (Oslo) with Amundsen and a crew of six. She arrived in Nome on August 31, 1906, and arrived in San Francisco on October 19, 1906. At the instigation of the Norwegian community in San Francisco, she was turned over to the city and put on exhibit in Golden Gate Park. GJOA remained in San Francisco until 1974, when she was returned to Norway and exhibited at the Norsk Siofartsmuseum (Norwegian Maritime Museum) in Bygdoy, Oslo.

Custodial history:

The collection was acquired by the San Francisco Maritime Museum from Al Harmon on February 25, 1958. The materials were accessioned into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
