Subjects include historic preservation, municipal records, tourism, commerce, and transportation.

Scope and content:

Materials in this collection include reports, flyers, municipal publications and records, histories, pieces from historical societies, reports, newsletters, calendars, and newspapers. These have been organized alphabetically by city. Cities with a large amount of material were further organized into subseries and sub-subseries. The Oversize materials are in a separate series, arranged to match the series order of the collection.

Biographical / historical:

The South Bay History Collection is an artificial collection created by the archives to house materials relating to the history of the South Bay. Materials in this collection were donated by local historians, the University Library, and archival staff.

In this collection, the South Bay is defined as the area south of the Los Angeles International Airport and the Glenn Anderson Freeway (CA 105) and west of the San Gabriel River Freeway (CA 605). Generally, the cities in this collection are within the borders of the Rancho San Pedro land grant, made in 1784.

Materials in this collection were collected by archives staff and members of the community. It is a growing collection.
Processing information:

This collection was originally processed in the 1980s by archival staff.

This finding aid was created as part of Early Los Angeles/Rancho San Pedro Manuscript Cataloging Project, a CSU Dominguez Hills Library project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The project started in 2005. Project Director was Greg Williams. Project Archivists were Thomas Philo and Jennifer Allan Goldman.
