Ivo John Lederer was born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. In 1941 Lederer's family fled from the Nazis to Italy. Lederer's family eventually resettled in New York. Dr. Lederer earned a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Colorado in 1951 and a master's and doctorate in contemporary diplomatic history at Princeton by 1957. He joined the faculty at Princeton University in 1954, moved to Yale University in 1957 and then later to Stanford University in 1965 as a Professor of history until 1977.
