Background
- Scope and content:
-
A complete set of ten lithographed hand-colored maps of Vienna, published (and possibly drawn) by Austrian cartographer Carl Graf Vasquez ca. 1840. The maps detail the city center (Innere Stadt) and surrounding districts (Bezirke), and illustrate the disposition of the encircling baroque-era walls before the institution of rail lines and other urban developments. This suggests that the maps were made at least before 1857, when the medieval ramparts were razed for the construction of the Ringstrasse (opened 1865) that surrounds the Innere Stadt, part of an ambitious modernization program begun by Emperor Franz Josef. Each map is surrounded by 14 views of major monuments. The first map relates a summary plan of the medieval city and neighboring districts as it appeared in 1147; the remainder are contemporary.
Arrangement noteThe collection consists of a single series of ten maps, arranged in individual folders.
