    Abstract: Charles Wilkin Waddell was an educator and scholar whose emphasis was on the education of teachers. He served as the director of the training department at the Los Angeles Normal School and continued as a professor of education when the school became the University of California at Los Angeles. The collection consists of correspondence and papers relating to the organization, history, and work of the UCLA Elementary Training School.

    Biography

    Charles Wilkin Waddell was born on March 6, 1875 near Taylorsville, Illinois. He attended primary and secondary school in Illinois and began his college coursework at Monmouth College before transferring to Colorado State Teachers College where he received a B.A. in 1903 and a M.A. in 1903. He then attended Clark University and received a PhD in psychology in 1905. After receiving his degree he taught and served as school superintendent at the Colorado State Normal School. In 1917, he moved to Los Angeles to become head of the training department at the Los Angeles State Normal School. When the school transitioned to become part of the University of California at Los Angeles, he served as professor of education and director of training department until his retirement in 1945. He died at the age of 86 on April 24, 1961 in Los Angeles.

    Scope and Content

    Collection consists of notes, correspondence, lectures and manuscripts on the subject of education and teacher training. Also included are some notes and comments on the University of California at Los Angeles elementary school.
