Scope and content:

The collection contains correspondence, financial, legal, and religious materials pertaining to a number of apparently unrelated individuals and organizations, primarily from Massachusetts and other parts of the eastern seaboard, from the mid-18th to the early-20th centuries. Some documents in the collection are from the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods. Surnames represented in the collection include: Blatchford, Coates, Cohen, D'Wolf, Hosmer, Lyons, Nathans, Ogden, Stirling, Tilton, and Wells (Welles).

Included in the collection are two slave documents (a bill of sale, 1819, and a bill of hire, n.d.). Also included are 18th and 19th century correspondence and other items from Great Britain, and 19th century correspondence in German (much of it from the U.S.).

A number of items in the collection apparently were collected for autographs, and in some cases have been cut from larger documents. The rationale for the title of the collection is unclear, but may relate to the seller or collector from whom the materials were acquired.
