Abstract:
The collection contains materials produced by the Institute for Crustal Studies (ICS), Earth Research Institute (ERI)'s predecessor, as well as materials compiled and collected by Pete Hall produced for geological surveys completed for the purpose of oil, gas and water well drilling in California.

Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains administrative materials produced and research materials held by the ICS, ERI's predecessor.

Materials may include annual reports, promotional materials, geological survey reports and maps, land agreements and leases, correspondence, and notes.

Biographical / historical:

The Earth Research Institute (ERI) is a UC Santa Barbara Organized Research Unit (ORU) focusing on supporting research and education in the sciences of the solid, fluid, and living Earth, to examine how Earth processes affect mankind and how mankind perturbs the Earth. ERI was founded in 2010, merging UCSB's Institute for Crustal Studies (ICS) and Institute for Computational Earth Systems Science (ICESS). The ICS was established as an interdisciplinary unit focused on the Earth's crust, with a key consideration for "deep time." The ICESS was established also as an interdisciplinary unit, to increase understanding of global environmental changes and assessing their impacts on the Earth and society.

Kempton Bishop Hall (K.B. "Pete" Hall) worked as a petroleum and ground water geologist for Richfield Oil, and subsequently ARCO. Hall also acted as a consultant to other large companies, government agencies, and private parties throughout his career. He was a pioneer in offshore exploration and worked on many of the first offshore rigs in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Hall served as President and Honorary Life Member of the Pacific Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Charter Member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, and was a founding member and President of the Coast Geological Society.

John Curran was a California State Registered Geologist and Certified Engineering Geologist who worked as a consultant throughout Santa Barbara County. Curran served as both the Vice President (1966) and President (1970) of the Pacific Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and was presented with their Honorary Life Membership Award in 1984. He also served as one of the first Chairmen for the Coast Geological Society.
