Biographical / historical:

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to Louis and Naomi (Levy) Ginsberg. American poet, author, lecturer, and teacher who was one of the core members of the Beat Generation of American author in the 1950s and early 1960s along with Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Neal Cassady. He died of complications of liver cancer on April 6, 1997.

Arrangement:

This collection of roughly 88,000 photographs has been arranged into five series. Series 1 contains photographic prints and is further divided into the subseries: Ginsberg by Others (subseries 1.1), Photographs by Others (Subseries 1.2), Photographs of Friends (1.3) and Ginsberg Family Photographs (1.4). Series 2. Contact Sheets includes numbered contact prints which have been described the print level. Series 3. contains numbered negatives sheets. Series 4 and 6 contain later additions to the collection, and Series 5 contains reference photocopies.
