Scope and content:

The collection contains about 300 files with correspondence, articles, newsletters, press releases, clippings, research notes, photographs, drafts and copies of Chandler's own articles, and related materials. It is arranged alphabetically by topic, person, or religious group. Included are files such as: Abortion, Black Muslims, Capital Punishment, Christians in Government, Deprogramming, Doomsday Groups, Eastern Mystery Religions, Evolution/Creation, Jerry Falwell, Louis Farrakhan, Science and Religion, Sports as Folk Religion, Tax Exemptions, and Terrorism.

Biographical / historical:

Russell Chandler was a religion writer for the Los Angeles Times newspaper from 1974 to 1992. He earned a Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and wrote several books on religious topics, including Understanding the New Age (1989), Racing toward 2001: The Forces Shaping America's Religious Future (1992), Doomsday: The End of the World - A View through Time (1993), and Feeding the Flock: Restaurants and Churches You'd Stand in Line For (1998).

Chandler was president of the Religion Newswriters Association (RNA) and won several awards for religion reporting, including the RNA's John Templeton Reporter of the Year Award three times. In 2002, he and his wife, Marjorie Lee Chandler, established the nation's first secular religion reporting award for student journalists.
