Background
- Scope and content:
-
Nurse Poole either wrote these notes to aid her reports to the attending physician, or some physicians, at least, read them directly -- the last entry in Dec. 1898 is addressed to Dr. Grant, asking him to leave orders for her in writing because she distrusts second-hand directives.
At the start of a new case, Poole names the the patient, the attending physician, and sometimes the disease or condition. Entries start with date, then note the patient's pulse and temperature, medicines administered, food and drink taken, sleep and mental condition, and her general remarks. Entries for the first three patients are in tabular form, with multiple columns neatly ruled in and named; after that she switched to a less time-demanding, less restrictive paragraph format. Many of her cases were postpartum care, but she also cared for post-operative cases, infections, a sick baby, etc. Poole was responsible for a wide range of functions: she administered medicine and special diets, gave "cleansing" and "nutritive" enemas, dressed wounds, removed stitches, bandaged, applied heating or cooling agents, etc.
Almost all of Poole's notes were made in pencil, and unfortunately a few pages are already very faint. The board-bound volume is worn, but in fairly good shape.
Most of this information is included in the bookseller's description, which is included with the volume.
