Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of records produced by city officials that afford insights into the administrative history of Stockton city government between 1857 and 1959.

Biographical / historical:

Known at various times as Tuleburg, Gas City, Crapton, and Mudville, the City of Stockton was founded in 1849 by Captain Charles Maria Weber, a native of Germany and an admirer of U.S. naval officer Commodore Robert F. Stockton. The city was incorporated in 1850 and soon became the county seat of San Joaquin County.

From earliest times, Stockton served a major hub of transportation due to its proximity to San Francisco, which stands some seventy five miles to the west, and its central location adjacent to the waterways of the San Joaquin Delta, features that proved crucial for the development of agriculture in California's Central Valley.

During the century covered by these records, Stockton blossomed into a major manufacturing center, as well, and its increasingly diverse population grew more than twenty-fold, from thirty-seven hundred to eighty-six thousand.
